Shooting an Elephant

Orwell states that he was hated and targeted for being a police officer. They would insult and play trick s on him. In the excerpt it states he “killed a rambunctious but not enraged elephant to satisfy the Burmese crowd daring him to prove himself.” When it came to killing the elephant he didn’t want to do it. The elephant looked harmless to him when he they came in contact with each other.
It seemed as the reason for killing the elephant was done because of peer pressure. The peer pressure he felt from the Burmese people was too much and in the end he killed the elephant. He saw killing the elephant would be the only chance of being liked by the Burmans’ in the town. I believed he killed the elephant because his job as a sub-divionsional officer kept him in the town. So since he knew he would be there for awhile he rather be respected than hated by the people.
